After crossing the Bay of Biscay, we drifted in the fog outside Viana do Castelo for hours waiting for the tide to turn. The aggravation was worth it. What a gem of a town and what friendly people! Viana was a great introduction to Portugal.

The ride on our first funicular to the basilica and pre-Roman ruins was a highlight.

Note to cruisers: there's a movable pedestrian bridge across the entrance to the marina. Apparently it isn't mentioned in many of the cruising guides.
