Yes, that Omaha Beach. We re-watched Band of Brothers before we went. If we hadn't, it would have been even more difficult to imagine the carnage 60+ years ago at this lovely stretch of beach along the English Channel.
The Normandy American Cemetery is moving beyond words and these few photos. The visitors' center includes vignettes of some of the Americans who died in the Normandy invasion, including the brothers of Saving Private Ryan. The rows of crosses with occasional Stars of David, beautiful flowers, statues and mosaic ceilings, bell-tower renditions of WWII classics on the hour … it's all surreally serene on this site of mass death and noisy destruction.
