Pico Island, Azores (July 2008)
One day the crews of Ventura, Aphrodite, Saeta, and Solstice took the ferry across the strait from Horta to the island of Pico, where the big volcano is. We rented cars and went exploring. Too bad we only had a day. Next time we want to circumnavigate the island and anchor along the way. It may be the only island in the Azores with good natural harbors, albeit small ones.
Azores means "hawk" in Portuguese, but this is the only island where we saw one. In fact, the absence of predators seemed to cause a plague of bunny rabbits on Flores.
On Pico we also visited a whale processing factory that had been turned into a museum, but that has its own photo page.
